Pancha Buddha
Pancha Buddha means five Buddhas. Also known as the Dhyani Buddhas. They represent five elements of the nature. They are unborn but still are present in this world. They also represents 4 directions that use to be a geographical 4 directions that helped the travelers, and businessmen in ancient time that connected Tibet and India with Nepal. The Positions each Buddhas occupy in Newari Buddhist Chaitya or Stupa tells the directions for people. In north Buddha Ratnasambhawa is seated on his throne of Mythical flying horse. Though he is the god of north facing south so he is situated at the southern face of chaitya or stupa that faces to south. Likewise, all other buddhas also sits on their positions in the chaitya that helps a traveler to chose his route in ancient times.Buddha figures that tells us directions:
Ratnasambhawa Buddha: God of North. When we look at him we face to North Direction.
Acchyobhya Buddha: God of West. When we look at him we face to West direction.
Vairochan Buddha: God of South East corner or the White hemisphere itself on the stupa
Amitabha Buddha: God of East. When we look at him we face to East direction.
Amoghasiddhi Buddha: God of South. When we look at him we face to South direction.
In Newari Buddhism, the Bajracharya people follows Vajrayaan Buddhism. There are 3 kinds of Buddhism in practice in Newari Buddhism.
- Hinayaan /Theravada
- Mahayaan
- Vajrayaan
Hinayaan or Theravada is the practice few does, that involves a person leaving his house, family and practices on Buddhism from a monastery to give up all the attachments. They practice Buddhism by studying in monastery, reading stories, Myths and Scriptures from Buddha, Bodhisatva and other holy monks. Mahayaan is the practice where people can have all what they need for the life. They live in a family and that could be an entire community. They help each other without the barriers of cast system though that is in written only. However, they practice to be selfless to acquire the salvation out of this samsara. They recite stories, goes to pilgrimages, pays homage to deities.
Vajrayaan is the practice where a guru practices Buddhism similar like Mahayaan Buddhist people though this practice includes the Tantrayaan and Mantrayaan. This practice of Tantrayaan and Mantrayaan has similarity with Bon Culture but not the same. We are giving the general information in this page however we will try to bring you more in details for better understanding.
Pancha Buddha has always been a trending topic for artist either for Newari Paubha, Tibetan Thangkas, Paintings. Their Figurative sculptures are mostly popular in Metal and Stones mediums since they are natural strong objects. However, there are few wooden Figures made in past in Wood too.
